"Wheel lug patterns," he said, "These can help me understand if these tires will fit properly on my truck. I wanted new truck tires but I didn't know what I was doing until I understood the way that the lug nut patterns work."

"The distance between the spaces on the wheel patterns can be hard to figure out," she said. "You can measure the distance between the lug nuts for the make and model of your vehicle by taking it to an auto shop, but doing so will cost more money than it's worth in most cases. You can measure and identify what pattern is on your vehicle with some simple tools."

"I know that now," he said. "The first step to identifying the wheel lug pattern on your vehicle is to inspect the tire itself. There should be several holes equidistant from the center of the tire. Most tires have four to six of these holes; these are the places where you'll be measuring. Heavier and larger vehicles tend to have more lug nut holes, while smaller vehicles will have patterns with fewer holes."

She sighed, "Each hole has a corresponding hole on the other side of the center of the tire. Take a tape measure and find the distance between the center of one hole and its partner on the other side. If your tire has a five holes for lug nuts, then measure from the center of one hole to the end of the one across from it. Lug nut holes come in different sizes, which is also important to note when trying to figure out which patterns you can fit on to your vehicle. Many lug nut holes are a half inch, but there are also holes that measure 9/16" or 5/8" holes."

He pounded his fist on the table impatiently. "Listen, if you're having trouble with this, there are a wide variety of websites that will give you the number of holes for your vehicle, and the distance between them. These databases include specific information for Chevrolet, Honda, Ford, Mitsubishi, Cadillac, Acura, Dodge, Infiniti, Lincoln, Nissan, Mazda, Hyundai, Kia, and other vehicle makes and models. Most people will probably want to do this if they are not enthusiastic to break out the tape measure and do it themselves. You can find databases for wheel lug patterns by looking it up on a search engine of your choice."
